About the Photographer:
Matthew's keen interest in photography first revealed itself during classes in high school when he found himself intrigued by the power of a single photograph. He quickly discovered an innate desire to capture more; he wanted to capture images that evoked emotion and told the story in a way that had never been done before. "I think it's important to be original, to capture different angles, to capture the raw emotion, and to reveal something the busy eye can't see," says Matthew. "I try to make readers feel like they can see what I see and they are part of the story."
From the photographs taken on his first camera, an Olympus OM2 35-mm, Matthew's talent was immediately obvious in his natural ability to communicate truth by capturing life through light, shadows, and emotions and by his creative use of angles.
In 2002 Matthew was recognized by the Museum of Fine Arts with an Honorable Mention for his photography. In 2007, he was recognized as a finalist for Photographer of the Year in the Best of GateHouse, by GateHouse Media Community Newspaper Company. Recently, he was awarded an honorable mention for his general feature and sports photographs in the GateHouse New England Clip Contest. In 2008, Matthew was awarded First Place from NEPA for the highest achievement in an audio slideshow on a website in the Weekly Class 2 Division.
Now, as a photographer for GateHouse, Matthew's skills stretch beyond
a single focus. His portfolio includes photographs featured in more than 22 weekly publications covering general news, spot news, sports news, and features stories. Matthew has experience in several multi-media photography pieces including his most recent production in which he captured both sound and images over the course of 12 weeks while following the training and daily work of firefighters from three Massachusetts towns: Arlington, Woburn, and Winchester. In 2007, Matthew began working with Sports Illustrated photographer, Damian Strohmeyer, covering both NFL, NBA and MLB sporting events and several college football games.
Matthew graduated in 2006 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Visual Communications and Photography at Endicott College. He previously worked at Lexington High School in Lexington, MA as a photographer assistant and as a photographer for Colonial Times Magazine. Matthew is experienced in the most state-of-the-art photography equipment and is proficient in both wet lab and digital photography techniques.
Matthew is available for freelance assignments as his schedule permits.
